THIS PHOTOGRAPH
shows the entrance area of the 137 Street station, only three months
before opening day. Not too long after the station opened, the name
"City College" was added to the station's name, for the institution
located above. The seal of City College, representing "Past, Present,
Future," is very prominent on the walls of this station, and the color
is overwhelmingly lavender. The "City College" name panels are quite
large and imposing. One interesting aspect of this photograph is at the
very left, a little above the center. It shows the same style station
number panel used at 79, 86 and 91 Streets, among other stations, but
without the number 137 inserted. These panels had the same basic
design for each station in which they were used, and only the correct
number had to be added at each station. This type of design was a
clever means of lowering the cost of subway station decoration. The
"City Hall" name panels at that station are also made up of several
pieces, but of course, no such panels exist anywhere else in the subway.
