ONE OF THE THREE vault lighting slabs above the tracks is being installed. These concrete slabs with plastic circular disks let in natural light to the station, which along the way passed through leaded glass panels in the ceiling. Only the slab nearest the end of the station remains, and by looking down through the holes that used to contain disks, one may see some of the leaded glass in the station. |

THIS VIEW OF what is now City Hall Park shows several indications of the new subway below. The three vault lighting slabs are visible (only the furthest remains), and wooden framework can be seen where the entrance and exits would eventually be. The building at left, the Post Office, is no longer extant. In the pavement in front of City Hall, the building at right, is a plaque commemorating groundbreaking for the subway in 1900. |
