The Tech

About this server

The Tech is proud to maintain one of the oldest world wide web sites in the world. The Tech produced its first online edition in May of 1993, making it one of the first 100 sites on the web. In fact, The Tech was quite possibly the first newspaper on the web

The server maintains both current and back issues of The Tech. The archive currently contains all of our issues from 1989 to the present. We are working on moving all our issues from 1985 to the 1989 to the web. For the moment, however, only Volume 105 (1985-1986) is available.

This server also maintains portions of The Tech Indexing Project, an attempt made in the late 1980s to create an electronic index of every issue of The Tech ever published. That data has been preserved in an incomplete state, but it appears to contain complete indexes of issues published from 1881 to 1901 and from 1952 to 1977. The text of the stories are not available online, but the MIT Libraries maintain copies of those issues on microfiche.

The Tech is archived using Desknet's APS Desknet software under a grant from Desknet, Inc.

The Tech's archives are hosted on www-tech.mit.edu, a Pentium Pro 200-based PC running Solaris 2.6 x86 and the Apache HTTP server. The Tech's search engine uses a recent version of glimpse with a Perl front-end. A Sun Sparcstation Classic running Solaris 2.6, the-tech.mit.edu, provides mail service and secondary web service.
