EIGHTEENTH
STREET is another one of the now abandoned stations on the
original IRT line. And like the other abandoned stations, it was
closed because of its proximity to an express station (although
interestingly, 18 Street on the West Side IRT 1/9 line remains open,
despite its closeness to the 14 Street station). The upper right hand
corner of the top photo shows a design unique to this station, the
oval shaped "18" plaque. The "18TH ST" name panel is similar to that
at the next station, 23 Street. The lower photo again shows a ticket
booth characteristic of the IRT. On a passing uptown 6 train, a shaft
of light can be seen entering the station; there is a horizontal
double door up on street level that opens into one of the station's
staircases. Unlike Worth Street, 18 Street was never extended, so one
can see how short indeed the original platforms were. Note the 18
design at the bottom of the ads in the top photograph.
