Introduction

In 2005 I spent two months in Asia, from mid-January to mid-March. The top highlights were attending the wedding of my friends Anand and Priya in South India (the original motive for the trip), and visiting my college buddies Liz and Seth in Tokyo. Some other memorable experiences included taking the Darjeeling & Himalaya steam train, sharing tea with my friends while floating the backwater canals of Kerala, negotiating with a scam-artist on the back of a truck in Cambodia, and squeezing into an impossibly-tight seat on a speedboat for a six-hour trip down the Mekong in Laos.

The image above is a montage taken from the back of an auto-rickshaw, the loud and polluting local transportation for most tourists in India. They are invariably driven by hard-bargaining and thrill-loving men. On a typical day, I took at least two auto-rickshaw rides.
