Prior to the founding of Udaipur, Chittor's mountain fortress was the capital of the Mewar state, and it had its own lake palace, albeit a much more modest one. Legend holds that the leader of an invading Muslim army spotted the beautiful wife of the raja reflected in the water of her lake palace and conquered the place to have her - leading the women of the fortress to commit mass suicide rather than surrender.
