New Delhi, the British-planned and built capital of India, closely
resembles Washington, DC, from an American's frame of reference: it
has the long grassy strip, a big monument (the India Gate), and
oversized government buildings in the Indo-Saracenic style, though for
the most part the European influence predominates.
Since the terrorist attacks on India's parliament, the small hill and
surrounding area where the president's house and parliament are
located are dotted with manned machine-gun posts hidden behind sandbags and
concrete barriers.
