The Shinkansen train (the name means New [train] Route Line) was
something of a dream: so smooth, so fast, so quiet. This is the way we
are meant to travel. True, the doors only open for 60-90 seconds at
each station, but it works. My first day in Japan and I crossed
half the country, from Fukuoka/Hakata to the Tokyo metro area, on two
trains and all by 2:00.
