Madurai temple complex

While the bride and groom were with their families for some private festivities, Priya and her family arranged a three day tour for some of the Western guests. We began with an overnight train ride to Madurai, a town famous for its Meenakshi temple, whose painted gopurams (towers) illustrate scenes from the Hindu epics.

The photo above shows our group (left-to-right): Don Lacey, Dave Hully, Anders, Meenakshi (or guide, whose name is the same as the temple), and Per. We were posing on the roofdeck of a building that, moments later, we learned contained a rug store whose owner wanted to take us through his long sales pitch. Apparently the roofdeck was just a lure to draw in tourists.
