As a group we toured the temple and rock-carving complex of Mahabilipuram, located right on the beach a couple of miles south of Fisherman's Cove. The structures there date from the 600-700 AD Pallava kingdom of South India. The shore temple was not damaged in the tsunami.

The major challenge of this temple complex is finding one's way past the crush of "temple touts," pushy hucksters hoping to make a quick 100 rupees selling trinkets or insisting on acting as a guide.
