Ouro Preto

This is the Praca Tiradentes, where the leader of the Inconfidenza was hanged, drawn, and quartered after the rebellion was put down. The rebel leader, Jose de Silva, was a sometimes soldier and sometimes dentist, and hence his nickname, Tiradentes (tooth puller). His statue stands in the square facing the elaborate town hall shown here. All the other rebels were granted a pardon and shipped off to Portugal.
