This is the Praca Tiradentes, where the leader of the Inconfidenza was
hanged, drawn, and quartered after the rebellion was put down. The
rebel leader, Jose de Silva, was a sometimes soldier and sometimes
dentist, and hence his nickname, Tiradentes (tooth puller). His statue
stands in the square facing the elaborate town hall shown here. All
the other rebels were granted a pardon and shipped off to Portugal.
