Cristo, Corcovado

Anand and I agreed that the view of Rio from Corcovado (the mountain with the statue of Christ with outstretched arms) is one of the most recognized in the world. A road goes almost all the way to the top, which seems amazing looking at the crag from below. The statue was built in the 1930s and Mass is still held there today. It was slightly polluted on the day of our visit. The first and third photos look out toward Rio de Janeiro harbor and the Pao de Azucar (Sugar Loaf). The second image shows the narrow strip of land known today as Ipanema.
