After an all-day trip on the Rio Frio and the Rio San Juan I arrived
at El Castillo de San Juan, a place I'd long hoped to visit. El
Castillo was a Spanish colonial fortress built to deter pirate
invasions into the wealthy inland port city of Granada, and it was
during a 1780 British assault on the fortress that Horatio Nelson,
the later hero of Trafalgar, saw his first combat action. The British
captured the fort only briefly before being defeated by tropical
illnesses brought on by the rainy weather.
The trip down the jungly and scenic Rio San Juan, through a tremendous
downpour, was one of the highlights of the trip.
