In the small town of Citala, El Salvador, I spotted a couple of murals about poverty and the famous martyred Archbishop Romero, killed by right-wing death squads for his outspoken statements about freedom and oppression during the dictatorships of the 1970's and 1980's.

Radio ads played on the local station advertised mayoral candidates from the dominant FMLN party, created from the former left-wing guerrilla organization that fought the dictatorship. "The FMLN congratulates all militants and urges you to cast your vote for its candidate ..." The party now dominates El Salvadorean politics.

The left side of the mural reads: "'A Christian who defends unjust positions is no longer Christian...' 'A journalist either tells the truth or isn't a journalist...' 'A Christian who sides with the oppressor is no longer Christian.'" Quotations from Romero.
