Shenyang: In early 2011 I made two trips to see Shenyang, briefly the capital of the Qing Dynasty before its conquest of the Ming in the 1600s. Shenyang has its own forbidden city palace and the tomb of Qing emperor Hong Taiji. On the day I arrived, a major hotel burned due to fireworks, though nobody was killed the outside of the building was charred all the way to the top.

The 1930's era hotel I stayed at was once the GHQ of the Japanese Occupation Army. After the Communist takeover, a Mao statue was put up, and the charging army of Chinese Communists appears to be directly attacking the hotel - including one fetching woman who appeared to be shooting directly into my window.
