![]() In April 2012 I followed the route of the Silk Road by train from Beijing to Kashgar over the course of 10 days, four of which were on the train. I first went to Jiayuguan, where the Great Wall begins. The second stop, Dunhuang, is famous for the Mogao caves, one of three giant Buddhist cave complexes in China. The third stop was Turpan (Tulufan), home of the Amin Minaret and a famous Silk Road oasis. The last stop was Kashgar (Kashi), and a trip up to the border with Tajikistan in the high Pamirs.
