 After the Battle of Austerlitz in December 1805, Napoleon sent his legendary foreign minister Talleyrand to negotiate the surrender of Austria at Bratislava. Talleyrand met his Austrian counterpart at the Primate's Palace, and the treaty they signed (the Treaty of Pressburg, using Bratislava's German name) put an effective end to the Holy Roman Empire.
