The Hoves have made quite a number of hikes up St. Mary’s Peak, about an hour south of Missoula in the Bitteroot Mountains. On my first hike to the top, my dad pulled a small Zip-Lock bag out from under a rock at the summit and showed us a note he’d left for himself about a decade earlier. The paper inside was a little decayed but in decent shape. We added our signatures and the dates, but I’m not sure I could find the rock where we hid it. A few minutes later, my brother-in-law Leon found another note that read: “Arnold Schwarzenegger, 1987.” It took us perhaps 15 seconds to figure out that intriguing mystery. [ Next ]
