On our last day we visited Kronborg castle in Helsinore, the town where Shakespeare's Hamlet is set. There is little real connection between the castle and the play, which is based on a legend rather than anyone real. Still, the castle is one of the most important historical sites in Denmark, since the royalty lived here for centuries overseeing the lucrative channel tolls that provided the bulk of state revenue until they were abolished in the mid-1800's. I was also interested in seeing the castle for its connection to Lord Nelson, whose fleet passed by here just prior to the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. (This is how it looked at the time.)
