At the top of Dead Woman's Pass, 4215 meters

Near noon on the second day we reached the summit of Dead Woman's Pass at 4215 m. Nothing in this photo suggests how hard we worked to reach the summit, how relieved we were to make it, or how high it is. (Higher than Mt. Fuji.) The camera angle is looking down the trail towards where we had started the day at 3100 m. The summit of the mountain ridge in the distant background was roughly level with our position. A package of 4 Oreo cookies that I'd bought in Urubamba the prior day had expanded like a balloon due to the low pressure. Pictured are: Ernesto (our guide), Rob & Luciana, Elaine (crouching), Katie & Mark, Chris B., Mark N., Anders, and Mark S.
