This is the old European quarter, colonized by the Venetians and Genoese during Byzantine times and continuing as a foreign quarter during Ottoman and even modern Turkish times. The trolley runs along Istiklal Caddesi, formerly the Grande Rue de Pera, which housed many of the foreign embassies (now consulates). |
