This picture shows some of the old wooden buildings that typified Ottoman era Istanbul. These are located just adjacent to one of the entrances of the Topkapi Palace. The wooden structures were a critical aspect of 20th century history, because British war planners believed that Istanbul's wooden buildings would quickly succumb to fire if bombarded by naval forces. This led them to hatch the scheme to force the Dardanelles in early 1915. This plan in turn led to the Gallipoli landings.
