That evening I took another train an hour further down the peninsula to the little tourist town of Nafplio. It really is like a suburb of Venice, totally lacking the crowds and dirt of Athens or the other Greek places I visited.

I ate my only good restaurant meal of the trip there. The red wine was bad, but cost only 0.40 euros per glass. (I splurged and grabbed two glasses while reading the newspaper and listening to the conversations of nearby tourist couples.)

The third picture is of the floodlit Nafplio castle, built by the Venetians on a rock face north of town.
