After renting the car, I drove up to Acre in the north of Israel. The fortified Crusader city was mostly destroyed or buried. The walls that remain date from the time of Napoleon's seige of Acre in 1799. Al-Djezzar's defeat of Napoleon (aided by the British fleet), marked the high-water mark of Napoleon's campaign in the Middle East.
