I really enjoyed exploring the plateau near Hattin, where Saladin defeated the Crusaders at the Battle of the Horns of Hattin (1187). The Crusaders were within a couple miles of reaching Tiberias when they were halted by Saladin's army, which had also occupied the water supply to their rear. Unable to move forward or back, and unable to keep fighting without water, Guy de Lusignan and Raynald de Chatillon surrendered their army of Templars and Hospitallers. The battle essentially sealed the fate of the Crusader kingdoms. The battle site is unmarked and I got a lot of curious looks from farmers nearby. |
