Dave and I took a taxi up to the Citadel, built by Saladin after the Battle of the Horns of Hattin to protect Cairo from Crusader invasions. (The Crusaders did invade, but they never reached the Citadel and Saladin's dynasty fell to the Mamlouks.) The current fortifications date to the period just after Napoleon's invasion, and they housed the Egyptian and British armies for most of the 1800s.
