At the Mongolia-China border, the train leaves Russia's broad-gauge line and enters China's standard gauge line, meaning all the wheel-sets (bogeys) have to be changed. The rail carriages are laborously and slowly lifted by giant hydraulic lifts, the bogeys rolled out from underneath, and new ones rolled in. The process takes about an hour. Passengers remain inside the train.
