Dad and I visited Ciudad Rodrigo near the border with Portugal. The city's fortress was a major battlefield of the Peninsular War. Wellington's capture of the fortress after an effective siege, along with his capture of Badajoz further south, enabled him to strike into the heart of Spain in 1812.
